Our Process

When you request an appointment, a member of our team will contact you promptly to arrange a suitable date and time. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive an email with detailed instructions and important information about your procedure.

On the day of your vasectomy, our friendly staff will welcome you and provide pre- and post-procedure care instructions, as well as a lab testing kit for follow-up analysis.

Our experienced doctors will address any remaining questions before performing the procedure, which typically takes only 10–15 minutes.

After the vasectomy, you will be monitored for approximately 10 minutes to ensure you’re feeling well before being discharged.

Twelve weeks later, you’ll receive a reminder email to submit a semen sample to the laboratory for testing, confirming the success of the procedure and completing your family planning journey with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect

During a no-scalpel vasectomy:

  • The doctor identifies the vas deferens beneath the skin.

  • A small 5mm opening is made with a specialised tool to access the tubes.

  • The tubes are brought to the surface and cauterised using an electrosurgical device.

  • The tubes are then returned to the scrotum, and the small opening heals naturally without stitches.

This approach minimises bleeding and typically leaves no visible scar.

While it’s normal to feel apprehensive, The Cooper Clinic has successfully performed thousands of vasectomies, earning high patient satisfaction. We aim to create a stress-free, professional environment, accommodating those with needle phobias or procedural anxiety. If this applies to you, contact our team to discuss tailored care options.

No, a vasectomy does not impact testosterone levels, sex drive, or the ability to have an erection, orgasm, or ejaculation. Post-vasectomy, sperm is simply reabsorbed by the body, and semen no longer contains sperm, meaning you cannot father a child.

It typically takes a few months and around 20 ejaculations to clear residual sperm from the ducts. By three months, 80% of men no longer have live sperm, though some may take longer. It’s essential to continue using contraception until lab tests confirm no live sperm in your semen. Written confirmation from The Cooper Clinic will indicate when it is safe to discontinue contraception.

Avoid strenuous activities such as running, cycling, or heavy lifting for 7–10 days post-procedure. Gradually resume training routines to allow proper healing and reduce the risk of complications.

What are the possible Potential complications include a 1–2% risk of infection or internal bleeding. Rarely, men may experience long-term scrotal pain (chronic testicular pain syndrome). Other risks include bruising, sperm granulomas (sperm leakage causing swelling), or temporary discomfort in the scrotum.

Long-Term Considerations

A vasectomy can be reversed, but it is a more complex procedure requiring a specialist’s expertise and is typically performed under general anaesthetic. The reversal involves microsurgery to reconnect the severed ends of the vas deferens. When successful, sperm returns to the ejaculate in at least 4 out of 5 cases.

However, even with a successful reversal, fertility is not guaranteed. Some men develop sperm antibodies that can hinder fertilisation. On average, 40-70% of couples achieve pregnancy within 2-3 years of regular intercourse following a vasectomy reversal.

If you are considering a vasectomy but think you might want children in the future, there are options to preserve your fertility. These include freezing sperm prior to the procedure or exploring assisted reproductive technology (ART) to conceive later. It’s essential to discuss these alternatives with your GP or vasectomist to make an informed decision.

At The Cooper Clinic, we collaborate with fertility specialists to ensure your family planning needs are fully supported.

Current research shows no significant link between vasectomy and long-term health risks, including prostate cancer. A comprehensive review of over 15 million men across 53 studies found no evidence of an increased risk of serious prostate cancer in men who underwent vasectomy.
